MILAN

Milan is a city with a thousand resources, so many emotions to know and discover. Masterpieces, monuments and a very interesting calendar of events always new and exciting. A city that can be different every morning, a place that is able to satisfy the diverse needs and expectations of every type of visitor.  Arts, culture, shopping and sport: this and more in a city which is not only a territory but a destination full of beautiful resources.

Milan offers a really unique variety of museums. Since Roman times there were many enlightened characters who promoted the arts in Milan, a long literary tradition, art, music and science that has made this city over the centuries a driving force and a crossroads of culture, leaving behind many tracks, some now held in major museum collections.

You can find several ancient churches of great importance along your route, among which the most famous is surely the Duomo, the Gothic Cathedral famous worldwide as the symbol of the city.

Milan hosts many other religious buildings of great historical and artistic value and among them in particular have to remember the four Christian basilicas: St. Ambrose which has always been considered the best example of Romanesque architecture in Lombardy and is certainly one of the oldest monuments of Christian art; the Basilica of San Lorenzo, Central Byzantine plan building known for its proximity to the famous columns; San Nazaro; San Simpliciano.

b. MONZA

MONZA

The historical city of Monza is home to a host of unique attractions and is an ideal base to explore the Brianza area. Its historic importance evolved during Longobard times when Queen Teodolinda converted the population to Catholicism.

The main monument of the town is the splendid Cathedral, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, patron saint of Monza. This beautiful example of Gothic church, which stands in the homonymous square, was built in the 14th century on the site of the previous baptistery ordered by Queen Teodolinda at the end of the 6th century. On the left side of the presbytery is the so-called Chapel of Queen Teodolinda, frescoed by the Zavattari.

The Iron Crown (Corona Ferrea) is kept in the same Chapel. An ancient tradition tells that one of the spikes of Christ’s Cross, found by St. Helena and given to his son, the Emperor Constantine, was inserted into the Crown.

The Royal Villa (Villa Reale) built between 1777 and 1780, commissioned by the archduke of Austria, Ferdinand, is one of the most important neo-classical buildings in Italy. Particularly worth visiting is the conservatory in spring and early summer to admire the splendid rose garden.

Created in 1806 by Eugenie de Beauharnais, the Park covers an area of 800ha, most of which consisting of woods and meadows. It is a delightful place to explore. This green oasis is a valuable refuge for a surprising variety of birds, amphibians, reptiles and mammals that increase the value and natural interest of the area. The park is also a great opportunity for outdoor sports, recreation, wellness and socialization. The famous racing track, built in 1922 on the initiative of the “Automobile Club of Milan”, is situated in the northern area of the park and it is open all year around. Important event are held here like the F1 Grand Prix.

The first itinerary, also known as Monasteri, covers the western part of the province and affords easy access for visits to characteristic monasteries and churches. The second itinerary is in the heart of the Valcalepio wine region. It passes through the city of Bergamo, the entire hill-country region from Alzano to Chiuduno, with their many castles and monasteries as well as beautiful natural sites. The third itinerary, called Laghi, begins at the Grumello exit on the A-4 Highway. It unwinds through the hills of Grumello del Monte, Gandosso and Villongo, ending on the shores of Lake Iseo. In addition to the many beautiful historical, wildlife and architectural sites, all these itineraries contain numerous production farms where you can stop to taste the DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) Valcalepio wines and the IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) Bergamasque wines.

e. CRESPI D’ADDA VILLAGE

CRESPI D’ADDA VILLAGE

Some history

Crespi is the name of the Lombard family of industrialists which realized a modern "Ideal Work Village" in the late nineteenth century next to their textile factory along the banks of the river Adda. The village is a real town built completely from scratch by the owner of the factory for its employees and their families. Workers were provided a house with garden and all the necessary services.

In this little perfect world the master "reigned" from his castle and provided as a father to all needs of employees: inside and outside the factory and from the "cradle to grave". In the village could only live who worked in the factory, and the lives of all individuals and the entire community revolved around the factory itself, its rhythms and its needs.

The village today

UNESCO welcomed Crespi d'Adda in the list of Protected World Heritage as an outstanding example of village workers, the most complete and best preserved in southern Europe. It is still a country town. There are no formal entrances or even time of entry. The factory instead, which ceased production in 2003 is closed: the former textile factory is currently not equipped as a museum but has preserved all its charm in its architectural appearance, fully observable along the main street.

The audio-guided visit

During summer time the guided tours take place outdoor on Sundays afternoon and bank holiday days. Tours are open to all and you can subscribe at the time they start. Wearing MP3 player headphones and going through the streets of Crespi with the help of a book-object and old photographs you can experience a journey back in time; you will be led by voice actors and background sounds in the distant February 1920, when the harmony of the city/factory changed forever. Six different scenes will tell the major events of those days, and many other didactic traces will provide you social cultural, architectural and technical information on the village and its history.

f. SANCTUARY OF CARAVAGGIO

SANCTUARY OF CARAVAGGIO

The Sanctuary of Caravaggio is situated in the territory of Caravaggio, in Lombardy, and dedicated to the cult of Santa Maria del Fonte, who, according to Catholic tradition, appeared in this locality in 1432, May the 26th, in front of the young peasant Jeannette de 'Vacchi. The monumental temple stands in the center of a vast plain surrounded by symmetrical arches on all four sides with 200 arches, nearly 800 meters. In front of the avenue linking to the city center is a high marble obelisk with bronze points, by Rustic Soliveri, who through its entries remembers the various miracles attributed to Madonna di Caravaggio. Just beyond the obelisk is a large fountain, whose water flows beneath the Sanctuaryl, collects the Sacred Source one and flows into the rear yard, where it is collected in a pool available to immerse the sick limbs.

A triple-lined avenue about 2 km long, completed in 1709, connects the Sanctuary to the city center; at the end of the avenue, by the entrance to the old town, is the triumphal arch of Porta Nuova which takes you to the attic of Apparizione marble group  erected in 1709 on the occasion of the solemn coronation of the Virgin. The exterior of the cathedral is magnificent. The richest part of masterpieces is the vestry of the Sanctuary, formerly chapel of the family Secco. The Sanctuary of Caravaggio, as well as being an important place of prayer, now hosts a reception center for pilgrims and ill people, a marriage and family counseling center and a center of spirituality.

g. SOTTO IL MONTE

SOTTO IL MONTE

It is a little town in the province of Bergamo located on the northern Bergamasque island. Most interesting sites are linked to the life of Angelo Roncalli, Pope John XXIII, now places of pilgrimage and popular devotion. Noteworthy are the Cascina Palace, where the pope was born, and the Cascina Colombera, where he lived from the age of 12 years, now run by a missionary group.

However, in the village there are important historical and artistic sites beyond the pontiff to whom he was devoted. This is the church of Santa Maria. Built in the fifteenth century it preserves paintings and frescoes of excellent quality. Also worth mentioning is the Church of St. John the Baptist, dating from the early twentieth century. Inside you can admire numerous eighteenth century frescoes originally located in the old parish and other made by Bartolomeo Nazari and Francis Chapel, and an imposing statue of the Madonna, which annually is carried in procession through the streets.

In the territory you can also visit the Ca 'Maitino, a rare example of private mansion. Built in the fifteenth century and belonged to the ancient family of Roncalli, the mansion was owned by Scotti family. The Torre S. John, on the hill overlooking the town and dating from the ninth century, was originally built as a bulwark of sight on the plains and was used as a bell tower. Noteworthy is the Chapel of Mary Queen of Peace, consecrated in 1976. This presents a very precious altar, from the ancient basilica of St. Peter, and a polychrome inlay depicting Pope John XXIII.

However, the element that has always characterized the area is the Abbey of St. Egidio. Built in Fontanella area in the tenth century in Romanesque style, is one of the best preserved medieval buildings throughout the province. Inside you can find frescoes and paintings of excellent workmanship dating from the twelfth and fifteenth centuries.
